Midgut carcinoids originating in the small intestine are the most common cause of the carcinoid syndrome. These tumours typically progress slowly and have an extended disease course, and although they often present with metastases at diagnosis, surgical treatment has become increasingly important for their management. The carcinoid syndrome, associated with carcinoid tumors of the midgut, consists of symptoms such as diarrhea, flushing, wheezing and cardiovascular symptoms.

Animal model. The transplantable human midgut carcinoid GOT1 was established as previously described (Kölby et al, 2001).In brief, cultured GOT1 cells were inoculated subcutaneously into nude mice. Midgut carcinoid tumors display CD4+ and CD8+ T cell infiltration, always in the presence of regulatory CD4+FoxP3+ cells. DISCUSSION: Midgut carcinoid patients display elevated T regulatory cell numbers and T cell dysfunction.
