The Bosniak scoring system is the currently accepted method for classifying renal cysts. It uses contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan data to classify cysts into five stages. Whilst stage I is a simple renal cyst, all other stages are complex cysts with abnormal morphology. The risk of malignancy increases with increasing stage.

Then, kidneys get enough blood volume and oxygen to repair damaged renal tissues and improve cyst fluid reabsorption by blood vessels. Characteristics and treatment of patients with Bosniak IIF and Bosniak III lesions are shown in Table 1. Seventy-seven percent (101 of 131) of patients with Bosniak III lesions underwent surgical excision of the lesion (s) rather than imaging surveillance. Active surveillance may be a reasonable option for Bosniak III cystic lesions, regardless of overall size, based upon their universal low grade and no patient developing metastatic disease. Bosniak was the normal radiological assessment procedure for cystic renal lesions. Originally, it relied on computed tomography (CT) scan results and subsequently extended to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

In our study, moderate to severe complications occurred in 19% (16/86) of patients who underwent surgical resection of a Bosniak cyst. Bosniak III and IV cysts warrant consideration of surgical treatment. Treatments may include partial nephrectomy (removal of the cyst only), radical nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney) or ablative therapies.

A Bosniak 4 cyst is considered an enhancing renal mass and must be assumed to be malignant and thus treated accordingly.

2017-07-01 · Bosniak IIF cysts, which showed reclassification to the Bosniak III/IV category during radiological followup (12%), showed malignancy in 85%, comparable to Bosniak IV cysts. The estimated surgical number needed to treat to avoid metastatic disease of Bosniak III and IV cysts was 140 and 40, respectively.

To evaluate moderately complex renal cysts of Bosniak category IIF. The regional ethics committee approved the study. In the period 2003–2009, radiological CT reports of 8,402 CT examinations of the kidneys were analysed retrospectively by one radiologist. All complex cystic lesions in the kidney (n = 550 in the same number of patients) were reclassified according to the Bosniak Bosniak 2F type of kidney cysts is one category of the Bosniak classification system of renal cystic masses.

Simple kidney cysts are usually small round sacs that are filled with a watery fluid. Most people who have them don't even know they have them. You might have to have treatment if your cyst bursts and bleeds, or grows big enough to press on other organs.

Most are harmless and go away eventually, but treatments and home remedies can help. Ganglion cysts are small, benign, fluid-filled sacs. Furthermore, as the majority of Bosniak category II and IIF cystic lesions were managed conservatively, the literature tends to overestimate the true malignancy risk of these lesions, as only the most complex ones undergo surgery. Introduction. The Bosniak renal cyst classification system, first described in 1986 (), is a well-established, widely used method that uses computed tomographic (CT) findings to categorize cystic renal masses into groups on the basis of imaging features associated with malignancy. The Bosniak classification system of renal cystic masses divides renal cystic masses into five categories on imaging characteristics on contrast-enhanced CT. It is helpful in predicting risk of malignancy and suggesting wither follow-up or treatment. In the past, renal cyst masses were either classified as simple cysts or complicated cysts. In 1986, 1 Bosniak classifications were adopted and revised many times, most significantly in 2005. 2 It was used as an effective method to determine renal cystic masses.

The update hopes to improve on the classification's predictive power for malignancy and minimize the number of benign lesions undergoing treatment. Smaller (<4 cm) Bosniak III cysts were more likely to be malignant and lesion size should be taken into consideration when considering management of complex cysts.

To access the cyst, Cystic lesion Bosniak III and IV are subject for surgical treatment. The method of choice is laparoscopic transperitoneal partial nephrectomy and radical nephrectomy.

Bosniak 2F type of kidney cysts is one category of the Bosniak classification system of renal cystic masses. The classification system puts renal (kidney) cysts into five categories, depending on the findings on CT. Besides Bosniak 2F, the other four include: Bosniak 1, Bosniak 2, Bosniak 3, and Bosniak 4.
